Since founded in 1979, Mitchell Industries has been a trusted service provider for the oil & gas, industrial, and petrochemical industries. Providing quality service is in our company’s DNA. Our goal is to continually build upon our proven track record by providing unparalleled service in the coating industry.

Surface Preparation

For virtually every coating process, the initial surface cleaning and preparation is the single most important factor in the success of the coating system. When properly executed, surface preparation can extend the long-term stability and overall performance of coatings by as much as 250%. It is a critical and essential first step before any type of anti-corrosion coating is applied.

The primary cause of corrosion is poor surface preparation. It is estimated that nearly 75% of all coating failures are due to inadequate or improper surface preparation. The integrity and life of the coating is directly affected by the condition of the surface to which it is applied. If surface preparation is not done correctly the coating will not adhere properly to the substrate material, which can significantly reduce the effectiveness and longevity of the coating.

Proper surface preparation not only removes detrimental surface contaminants such as oil, grease, rust, and mill scale, but also conditions the substrate material to create a suitable surface profile.

Surface Preparation Method

• Abrasive Blasting – commonly used in the preparation of steel that has mill scale and rust present. Abrasive blasting (or sandblasting) is the process of shooting an abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to remove contaminants, and create a surface profile that is suitable for the selected coating system.

Abrasive Blasting Services

Our veteran team is experienced in a variety of sandblasting techniques, and understand the importance of  selecting the proper blasting media to fit project requirements. Currently, our facility houses an indoor 20x20x50 blast room with a media reclamation system. Our trained specialists can perform cosmetic and abrasive blasting using a variety of materials, such as:

  • Aluminum Oxide
  • Black Beauty
  • Garnet
  • Steel Grit
  • Walnut Shell
  • Glass Bead / Crushed Glass
  • Copper Slag
  • Sugar
  • Plastic (Synthetic) Abrasives
  • Steel Shot
  • Corn Cobbs
  • Other abrasive medias, as required

Tank Linings

Corrosion resistant tank linings provide an essential layer of protection against harsh chemicals, hazardous materials, and abrasive agents. Prolonged exposure to these damaging substances can severely jeopardize the tanks structural integrity, reducing the equipment’s life expectancy and ultimately costing businesses time and money.

The coating team at M.I. has extensive experience with tank lining systems. We offer a comprehensive suite of corrosion resistant tank lining systems for ISO containers, tank trailers (OTR’s), pipe linings, steel or concrete tanks, water tanks, and bulk storage tanks.

We work closely with preferred suppliers such as Advance Polymers, Carboline, Hempel, PPG, International, and Sherwin Williams to ensure that the proper coating/lining system is selected for your application. Our team of coating specialists will deliver a cost-effective coating solution, determine the appropriate application method, and provide you with detailed inspection reports upon completion.

Thermal Spray Coatings (Metalizing)

Thermal Spray, or metalizing, has long been regarded as superior corrosion protection for steel and concrete structures that are subject to severely corrosive environments. Thermal Spray is commonly used in a variety of applications across several different industries.

  • Petrochemical / Refineries (valves, pumps, piping)
  • High Temperature Components (heat exchangers)
  • Process Vessels (storage tanks, ISO containers)
  • Infrastructure (bridges, structural steel)
  • Marine / Offshore

Mitchell Industries specializes in both flame spray and arc spray applications. We offer thermal spray coatings in aluminum, zinc, nickel, stainless steel, and inconel. Our coating specialists are trained in each metalizing process and are certified through a third party training program.

Industrial Powder Coating

Powder coating can provide a durable and impact resistant finish that protects against corrosion, chipping, and scratching. Unlike conventional liquid paint, powder coatings do not have a liquid carrier so it can produce scratching. Unlike conventional liquid paint, powder coatings do not have a liquid carrier so it can produce electrostatically and then cured under heat, providing a finish that is harder and more resistant than conventional paint. Because of its durable properties and impact resistant aspects, powder coatings are commonly used in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, refining, manufacturing, and construction.

M.I. offers powder coating services in a limited capacity for industrial and commercial applications. We specialize in fusion bonded epoxy coatings for petroleum and industrial equipment, as well as piping and  process control equipment for the petrochemical and refining industries.

Hydrostatic Testing

Hydrostatic testing is the process of applying pressure to vessels, tanks, valves, and piping to verify equipment performance, detect leaks, and confirm pressure ratings. M.I. currently offers in-house hydro testing up to 20,000 psi. Customers are provided with digital (electronic) test reports after each hydro test is performed.

The M.I. Advantage – As part of our value proposition, M.I. offers in-house hydro testing, assembly and disassembly, welding / fabrication, and machining services. These value added services can be performed independently, or can be combined with coating projects.

Passivation

Passivation is a post-fabrication process that makes the substrate metal more corrosion resistant by forming a protective oxide film on the surface of the material. The passivation process returns stainless steels and other metals back to their original specification by removing oils, debris, and other various particles from the surface.

Mitchell Industries offers passivation services in accordance with ASTM A967 and A380 specifications.

M.I.'s Accerlerate Program

M.I.’s Accelerate Program is a premium service offered to customers that need their equipment coated and delivered expeditiously. It’s not uncommon for manufacturers to hit a bottleneck when moving from finished build, to paint, to end user delivery. Often times, coating and corrosion protection services are overlooked, under planned… or a combination of both. We get it. We’ve all been there!

Our Accelerate Program streamlines the surface prep and coating processes, moves your project to the front of the line, and significantly reduces lead times when you need it most.
